I have to say, I'm a little surprised, albeit pleasantly. Didn't think they would have any interest in starting in Div 2, but I'm glad they are. Could be a huge boost to the NASL to be in that market. That is, if they can get themselves a decent stadium and market themselves properly.

Last year I watched and listened to number of interviews with the Directors of football at the club, and it seemed then that the MLS model didn't fitThe Cosmos' mind set. MLS contracted Players rather than the club having control of its roster seemed to be a major issue, irrespective of the other group collective agreements inherent in the Div 1 set up.

It seems as If the Cosmos, at this point, prefer to be a club rather than the MLS' latest retail outlet. Given time it might change and they "Promote" like the Timbers did, with their clubs tradition intact.

Or like the Impact did with their dignity and traditions intact... at least they got to write a big cheque and play in a half empty stadium with ten times the overhead. It was all worth it for the chance to lose to TFC more than twice a year!

As for the cosmos- This is huge! The biggest issue for sports team is recognition and they already have it at the top levels of the game. If they can field a quality roster, they may be the traveling show that every league needs (NY Yankees, LA Galaxy, Detroit Red Wings (USA)/ Toronto Maple Leafs (CAN), Manchester United are examples from the top levels). These are teams that have good numbers of fans in every location and are hated enough by everyone else to create the animosity that sells tickets.

That sure puts the screws to MLS getting the Cosmos eh?

I have a feeling the Cosmos brand will initially get some good attendance. After that, I guess it depends on the professionalism of the product. Wonder where they will play?

As earlier posted by me on cansoc...

I'd just like to add, and without any disrepect to the Red bulls intended, in paraphrase of the obdurate Amity Island mayor Larry Vaughn.

"You yell New York Red bulls people say" Huh -what"
You yell New York Cosmos, and you got yourself a Party on the 12th of July!"
